    Grilled chicken sandwich recipe with step-by-step photos and a video recipe. Easy chicken sandwich recipe made with grilled chicken combined with lots of veggies, sauce, and cheese. This juicy grilled chicken sandwich filling is stuffed inside a bun or bread. Grill the sandwiches on stove top or a pan. Or you can serve it cold.

    This is the best chicken sandwich that you can make easily with fewer ingredients. If you have leftover grilled chicken, you can make these sandwiches quickly within 10 minutes.

    This chicken sandwich recipe is so versatile that you can add or skip the ingredients as per your liking.

    About this recipe

    • Quick and easy to make.
    • Great for Meal-prep - You can grill the chicken in advance. Let it come to room temperature. Transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate. Use within 2 days. Or for a longer shelf life freeze it. It stays good for a month. Chop the veggies and transfer them to an airtight container and refrigerate. Stays good for a week.
    • Great way to use leftovers - If you have leftover grilled chicken then you can make these sandwiches within 10 minutes.
    • Kid-friendly - If your kids are fuzzy eaters then this is a great way to make them have a healthy breakfast or snack or pack it for their lunch box. They will not be able to identify that there are veggies hidden in this sandwich.
    • Easy to customize - You can make the sandwich with whatever ingredients you have in your kitchen pantry. I have given the substitutions for the ingredients below.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

    • Chicken - I have used boneless skinless chicken breast but you can also use boneless chicken thighs.
    • Bread - You can use white bread, brown bread, or multi-grain bread. Or use soft hamburger buns to make this sandwich.
    • Italian seasoning - It gives a very nice flavor to the chicken. You can substitute it with fajita seasoning or Cajun seasoning or use tandoori chicken masala or garam masala.
    • Sauce - I have used the combination of tomato-mayo sauce. This gives a balanced sweet, sour, and spicy flavor to the sandwich filling. Substitute it with sriracha or any other sauce of your choice.
    • Vegetables - I have used onions and bell peppers (green, yellow, and red). You can use any vegetables you have on hand. You can also add some broccoli or boiled corn to it.
    • Flavoring - Salt, crushed black pepper, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes. If you do not like spicy foods or are making for kids then skip adding red pepper flakes to the recipe.
    • Butter - You can substitute it with oil or Ghee (clarified butter).
    • Cheese - I have used mozzarella cheese. You can add any cheese of your choice.

    How to Make a Grilled Chicken Sandwich

    Marinate the Chicken

    1. In a mixing bowl combine chicken with ingredients mentioned under marinade. Marinate for 30 minutes to an hour. Set it aside.

    Grill the chicken

    1. Heat a grill pan over medium heat.
    2. Place the chicken on the grill pan.
    3. Grill the chicken until it is cooked on both sides.
    4. Remove it to a plate and let it rest for 10 minutes.

    For making the sandwich filling

    1. Combine mayonnaise and tomato sauce. Set it aside.
    2. Chop the grilled chicken into small pieces. Transfer it to a mixing bowl.
    3. To the same bowl, add green, yellow, and red bell pepper, onion, cheese, and the prepared mayo-tomato sauce.

    Making the grilled chicken sandwich

    1. Apply butter to one bread slice.
    2. Spread the sandwich filling on it.
    3. Take another slice of bread, apply butter and cover the sandwich.
    4. Heat a grill pan over medium heat.
    5. Place the butter side of the sandwich facing the grill pan.
    6. Apply butter on the top.
    7. Toast the sandwich.
    8. Slice it and serve.

    Tips to make Best Grilled Chicken Sandwich

    • Marinate the chicken at least for 30 minutes to an hour for the best flavors.
    • Slice the chicken breast into half or pound it. It ensures that the chicken is cooked evenly.
    • For the grilled chicken - Make sure the grill pan is hot enough. When you place the chicken on it, you must hear the sizzling noise. It will seal the outer surface of the chicken which will make the chicken crispy outside and juicy inside.
    • Toasting the bread adds a little crunch to the sandwich. If you like a cold chicken sandwich then serve them without toasting them.
    • The addition of butter enhances the flavor of the sandwich. You can substitute it with clarified butter or Ghee. But do not substitute it with oil.
    • While making the chicken sandwich filling, make sure there is enough moisture in the filling. It should not be dry. If required, add more mayonnaise or tomato sauce, to make a super juicy chicken sandwich.

    Serving Suggestions

    1. Serve it with Salads like Corn Salad, Macaroni Salad, Asian Slaw, or Greek Yogurt Coleslaw.
    2. Or with Grilled veggies.

    Storage Suggestions

    • Store Grilled chicken in an airtight container and freeze it. Stays good for a month.
    • This sandwich filling is not freezer friendly. The mayo will become watery and disintegrates once you thaw it.
    • Do not store the leftover sandwich. It will become soggy after some time.

    Ingredients

    For the marinade

    • 1 chicken breast sliced in halves
    • 2 teaspoon oil
    • 1 teaspoon red chili flakes
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper powder
    • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
    • salt to taste

    For the sauce

    • ¼ cup mayonnaise
    • 2 tablespoon tomato sauce

    For grilled chicken sandwich filling

    • ¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
    • ¼ cup chopped yellow bell pepper
    • ¼ cup chopped red bell pepper
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped chopped
    • ¼ cup grated mozzarella cheese
    • ¼ cup prepared sauce

    To toast the sandwich

    • Butter
    • 6 sandwich bread slices

    Instructions
