Have you heard about Dalgona Coffee? It is a creamy Korean whipped coffee that can be made at home with only 3 ingredients in just 5 minutes with a hand mixer. In this recipe post, I am sharing how to make it.
Summer has just started, & it’s the perfect time to make some cold coffee, milkshakes & Ice creams.
This coffee is similar to the "beaten coffee" that we make in India. All you need is only 3 ingredients & you can make this restaurant-style thick creamy beaten coffee at home in just 5 minutes.
What is Whipped Coffee (Dalgona Coffee)?
It is popularly known as Dalgona coffee is made by whipping equal portions of Instant coffee powder, sugar & water until fluffy & creamy. Serve it over hot or cold milk.
Frothy Dalgona coffee is ready! Dalgona got its name from a popular South Korean honeycomb toffee called “Dalgona”.

Preparations:
- In a bowl add instant coffee powder, sugar & 2 tablespoons of water.
- Use an electric or hand whisk. I have used an electric whisk. Whip it for 5 minutes.
- The coffee will be light & thick now. Add one teaspoon of water at a time & whisk.
- Continue this step until sugar is completely dissolved & the consistency of the whipped coffee is soft & creamier.
- Stop when it reaches stiff peaks.
Making Dalgona Coffee
- Pour ¾ cup of milk in a glass.
- Add ice to make dalgona iced coffee.
- Spoon the whipped mixture on the top of the milk.
- Serve it with a straw or a spoon.
- Mix the whipped cream with straw & enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Use granulated sugar instead of powdered sugar. When you whip the coffee, granulated sugar takes a little longer to dissolve but makes the coffee fluffy & creamier.
- To whip the coffee use either an electric whisk or hand whisk. Better to use electric whisk. Whip the coffee powder, water & sugar until it is light & fluffy.
- Be careful while adding water. Start whipping the coffee with sugar by adding 2 teaspoon of water. After some time, the mixture will be thick. Now add 1 teaspoon of water at a time & whip until the consistency of coffee is smooth & creamy.
- If you add too much water in the beginning then you will not be able to whip it.
- Instant coffee powder is the best choice. It gets whipped up beautifully & makes a light & fluffy coffee.
- You can use either cold or hot milk to make it. Personally, I feel it tastes great with cold milk.
- To make Dalgona iced coffee, add some ice cubes to the milk. Spoon out the whipped mixture on the top. Serve immediately.
- Traditionally equal quantity of coffee & sugar is added. It tastes bitter. So I have increased the quantity of sugar for this recipe. If you prefer less sweet then go ahead with the same proportion of coffee powder to sugar.
FAQs
Yes, it is the same beaten coffee (Phenti Hui coffee) that we make in India. It is also popularly known as "Indian Style Cappuccino Coffee".
The only difference is that we add milk to the top of the beaten coffee. On the contrary, while making Dalgona coffee, beaten coffee is added to the top of milk.
You can use a hand whisk or a spoon to make it. Whisk the coffee with the hand whisk or a spoon continuously for 15-20 minutes (depending on the quantity, it may take even longer). Stop when it becomes light & fluffy.
Use almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk instead of dairy milk. Just whip the coffee powder, sugar, and water.
Pour some vegan milk into a glass. Add some ice cubes & scoop out the whipped mixture to the top of vegan milk.
Honestly, I tried making it with less sugar but it doesn't fluff up. Sugar helps the coffee to become fluffy. So you have to add an equal quantity of sugar and coffee.
It is because you have not added the right quantity of sugar. Add an equal quantity of sugar and water for better results.
Serving suggestions
You can top it up with some grated chocolate or coffee powder or cocoa powder or chocolate chips. Serve immediately & enjoy!
