    What is a momo?

Momo simply means "steamed bun". It is a steamed bun with vegetarian or non-vegetarian filling. Momos are of two types: Steamed Momos and Fried Momos.

Momo is becoming a popular street food in India. It tastes so delicious & you can prepare Momos easily at home. Similar Indian street food recipes you might like are our Chicken Chow Mein and Gobi Manchurian.

    What to serve with Momos?

Momos are served hot with momo chutney (dip). Momo chutney is a spicy sauce made with red chili & garlic. You can also serve it with spicy tomato sauce or Schezwan sauce.

    How to make Veg Momos

    Preparations

    1. Finely chop the vegetables (cabbage, onion, and spring onion greens) and grate the carrot.
    2. Take finely chopped cabbage in a mixing bowl. Add salt and mix. Keep it aside for 15 minutes.
    3. After 15 minutes, squeeze out the excess water from the cabbage. Set this aside.

    To make the momo dough

    1. In another mixing bowl, add all-purpose flour and water.
    2. Knead a semi-stiff dough. Apply some oil on the surface of the dough, cover it, and keep it aside.

    To make the vegetable filling

    1. Take cabbage, carrot, onion, spring onion greens, ginger, garlic paste, soy sauce & black pepper powder. Mix it and taste it.
    2. Add salt, olive oil, lemon juice & red chili powder & mix. Cover and set aside. If you do not prefer spicy food, then skip adding red chili powder to it.

    Assembling the veg momos

    1. Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes again. The key to making perfect momos is that the dough should be kneaded well. Take a small portion of the dough. Cover the rest of the dough.
    2. Roll it thin from the sides/edges and thick at the center.
    3. Spoon some filling in the middle.
    4. Seal the momos. Keep it covered with a kitchen towel. Same way, make others.
    5. Another easy way to shape the momo is shown in the pic below.
    6. You can watch the video to learn how to shape the momos. I have shared two different ways to shape the momos.

    Cooking the veg momos

    1. Grease the steamer plate with some oil.
    2. Heat the steamer. When the water in the steamer starts to boil, it is ready.
    3. Place the momos over the steamer plate.
    4. Cover with the lid and steam for 12-15 minutes on medium flame.
    5. After 12 minutes, the outer cover of the momos will be shiny. If you touch it with your finger, it will not stick to your hands. This is an indication that the momos are ready.
    6. Serve the veg momos immediately with spicy momo chutney(dip).
    7. You can make the momos in an Idli steamer too.

    Cooking Tips

    1. Finely chop the vegetables to make veg momos filling. It helps the vegetables cook faster. You can also use a food processor to finely chop the vegetables.
    2. Squeeze out the excess water from the cabbage. If you are using cabbage in the momo filling, then add a little salt, mix & squeeze out the excess water. Cabbage releases water when cooked, and it can make the momos soggy.
    3. The momo dough should be kneaded well. It should be smooth, stretchy & semi-stiff dough. Not a stiff dough nor a smooth dough.
    4. Shaping the momos is easy but requires a bit of patience & practice. You can check out the video to learn how to shape the momos easily.
    5. Cover the prepared momos with a kitchen towel until you are ready to steam it.
    6. While steaming the momos, check after 10-12 minutes. The outer cover will be shiny, transparent & if you touch it with your finger, it will not stick to it. This is an indication that Momos are ready.

    Notes

    1. If you are making momos for the first time then seal the momos properly.
    2. Removing excess water from the cabbage is important. Otherwise, when you will steam cook the momos the momos will be soggy.
    3. You can add any vegetables of your choice. Make sure they do not turn out to be soggy when cooked.
    4. Do not roll the outer cover of the momos thick.
    5. Make sure to knead the dough properly. If the dough is smooth and stretchy, your momos will be perfect.
    6. Taste the momo filling before adding salt. Soy sauce is salty and we have already added salt in finely chopped cabbage to squeeze out the water.
    7. Serve momos immediately with any spicy dip. Once cooled down they don't taste good.
    8. Addition of red chili powder is optional. If you do not prefer spicy food then skip adding it.
