    Why you'll love this recipe!

    • Always Handy: I love keeping a jar of homemade breadcrumbs because it saves me on those busy days when I suddenly need breadcrumbs for veg nuggets, potato nuggets, cutlets, patties, or veg lollipops..
    • Quick & Easy: The whole thing takes around 30 minutes, and most of the time, you are just waiting for the bread to toast.
    • Make It Your Way: Oven or Stovetop - Some days I use the oven, and other days I just toast it on the stovetop. Both ways are simple and give perfect crumbs.
    • Choose Your Texture: Some days I want a fine powder, other days a coarse, crunchy crumb. You can make it exactly the way you like.
    • Tastes Fresher: Homemade crumbs always smell fresher than the store ones. There is a warm, toasty aroma I really enjoy.
    • Uses Any Bread: White, brown, leftover, slightly old. I have used all kinds, and they always work.
    • Stores Well: Store it well, and it stays fresh for weeks, which makes it such a good kitchen helper.

    Ingredients Notes

I like to use day-old bread because it is a little dry already, which makes it easier to turn into nice, crunchy breadcrumbs. If I only have fresh bread, I'll pop it in the fridge or leave it uncovered for a few hours so it dries out a bit.

Using dried or slightly stale bread helps remove excess moisture and means you'll get a crispier result when you toast or grind it.

    How to make breadcrumbs

    • Cut off the brown edges of the bread. Slice each piece into 4 small chunks. Add them to a mixer and grind. Keep it a little coarse, or grind extra if you need fine breadcrumbs.

    Oven Method

    • Preheat your oven to 180°C. Spread the breadcrumbs and bake for 10 minutes. Take the tray out and stir. The top will look golden, but the bottom will still feel soft. Put it back in and bake for 5 7 minutes more, until the crumbs are dry and crisp. Keep an eye on it because oven times can change from kitchen to kitchen.

Take the baking tray out and allow it to cool down completely. Store it in an airtight container and keep it in the freezer.

      Stovetop Method

      • Heat a pan and add the ground bread crumbs. Keep the heat on medium and start dry roasting. When the crumbs at the bottom feel crisp, lower the heat. Continue roasting until all the crumbs turn dry, light, and grainy.

Transfer it to another plate. Let it cool down completely. Store it in an airtight container and keep it in the freezer.

        Recipe Tips

        1. Use Leftover Bread: Whenever I have extra bread, I slip it into a zip-lock bag and keep it in the fridge. After a day or two, it dries out nicely and becomes perfect for breadcrumbs.
        2. Any bread works: I mostly use regular white bread, but brown bread and multigrain bread work just as well if you want a healthier option.
        3. Store for longer: Freeze your breadcrumbs, and they will stay good for almost 2 months. It is a nice little backup for busy days.
        4. Use the crust or skip it: Many people remove the brown edges for a cleaner white color. I usually keep them because they add a bit more flavor.
        5. Make it finer: If you want very fine breadcrumbs, just grind them again after roasting.

        Equipment

        • Heavy bottom pan

        Ingredients

        • 6-7 bread slices
        • or use brown bread slices

        Instructions

        • Cut and remove the sides(brown part) of the bread.
        • Now cut the bread in 4 parts. Similarly, prepare all the bread pieces.
        • Grind it in a mixer/food processor. Grind it a bit coarse but if the recipe calls for adding fine breadcrumbs then grind it fine.

For making bread crumbs in the microwave:

        • Preheat the oven at 180 degree Celsius.
        • Bake at 180 degree Celsius for about 10 minutes.
        • Take out the baking pan, you will see that the top of the breadcrumbs has changed its color but the breadcrumbs at the bottom are still soft. Stir it well.
        • Again bake it for 5-7 minutes till the breadcrumbs are completely dry and grainy. Be careful the timings may vary.
        • Take the baking pan out and let it cool down completely. Store it in an airtight container and keep it in the freezer.

For making the breadcrumbs on stove top:

        • Heat a pan and add the powdered bread crumbs.
        • Keep the flame on medium and dry roast it.
        • Once you feel the breadcrumbs at the base of the pan started to become crisp, then lower the flame.
        • Now continue to roast it till it becomes completely dry and grainy in texture.
        • Switch off the flame. Let the breadcrumbs cool down completely.
        • Store it in an airtight container and keep it in the freezer.
