Ingredients and Substitutions
- Chicken - I have used boneless, skinless chicken breast. You can also use boneless chicken thighs.
- Broccoli - You can use either fresh broccoli or frozen. If using frozen broccoli thaw it properly and place it on a kitchen towel to remove excess moisture from it. Or you can add any veggies like green beans, asparagus, or zucchini.
- Flavoring - Salt, pepper, paprika, red pepper flakes, Italian seasoning. You can substitute Italian seasoning with ½ teaspoon thyme and ½ teaspoon oregano. Skip red pepper flakes and paprika, if you do not prefer spicy foods.
- Oil - I have used refined olive oil. You can use any neutral flavor cooking oil.
- Butter - I have used unsalted butter.
- Fresh garlic
- Chicken broth - Low sodium chicken broth is preferred. It makes the dish flavorful. You can substitute it with white wine.
- Fresh lemon juice - You can substitute it with vinegar.
- Cilantro - Substitute it with parsley.

Preparations
- Cut the chicken breast into bite-size pieces. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, and paprika. Set it aside for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, steam cook broccoli - Pour 1-inch of water in a saucepan or steamer. Let the water come to a boil. Put the broccoli in a steamer basket and place it over boiling water. Reduce the heat to simmer. Cover it and cook for 5 minutes. Remove the steamer basket and set it aside.
Making easy chicken and broccoli recipe
- Heat 2 teaspoon of oil + 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet on medium heat.
- Add chicken in a single layer. Make sure there is some space between them. Cook until the color of chicken turns from pink to white. Stir and cook until the chicken is just cooked. Do not overcook the chicken. Remove it to a plate. Keep it covered.
- To the same pan, add 1 tablespoon of butter.
- When the butter melts, add garlic, red pepper flakes, and Italian seasoning. Cook for 30 seconds.
- Add chicken broth to deglaze the pan. Gently scrape the brown bits sticking to the bottom of the pan. Cook it for 2-3 minutes or until the sauce reduces.
- Stir in lemon juice and pepper.
- Add broccoli and chicken. Combine and cook for 2 minutes on low heat. Remove from heat.
- Garnish with cilantro. Healthy chicken and broccoli recipe is ready to serve.
Tips to make Chicken and Broccoli
- Do not overcrowd the pan while frying the chicken. If necessary fry the chicken in two batches.
- Make sure there is some space between the chicken pieces when you are pan-frying them. It will ensure that the chicken gets crispy fried.
- Steam-cook the broccoli before adding it to the pan.
- I have used Italian seasoning to flavor the dish. You can use any of your favorite herbs like thyme or oregano.
- Skip red pepper flakes and paprika, if you do not prefer spicy dishes.
- Chicken broth has salt in it. Taste and add salt to the recipe accordingly.
